Type Project

This is my final piece for my type project I done for college, it is based as an advertising method for the big book of typographics. The colours I used were based on the original book covers, and the layout I used was just through trial and error. I am happy with this outcome, and I like the way it can moulded for use on all sorts of merchandise like key rings, posters, bookmarks, and also just for the book covers.

UCAS application

I have recently applied to do higher national diploma at canterbury college next year through UCAS. I decided not to go university because I wanted to further my studies at college doing higher national diploma and then after that I plan to do another year at canterbury to get a bachelors of arts honours degree. One of the reasons I am staying here is because it is easier to travel to without staying away and also because it has good facilities and i think it would benefit me a lot in my further career into graphic design.

Good and Bad Websites

The following 3 screenshots are from what I would say are some of the worst websites I have found. They are very unorganised and pixelated a lot, the colours are all over the place and the pictures are very edited in a bad way and the animations all over the place which  make it to flashy and hard to look at. The typography on these websites are not fluent and consistent and they are so hard to use and navigate through. The layout of these websites are appauling and so unorganised.

The next three screenshots are from websites that i have considered appealing to look at and well designed. I like these three as they are easy to navigate around and also have a good graphical element to them. They use good imagery and illustrations and are a whole lot more organised than the screenshots above. I like the top one and the bottom one as they are very square and neat and uses a consistent type face which makes it all a lot easier to read. The middle one (gerald Scarfe website) I like as it portrays the artist as it consistently shows you his style of art work throughout the whole website.

John Downer - Sign Painter

John Downer is a sign painter that I heard of from the Creative Review magazine, he paints signs for all different things from advertising on posters to shop windows. I really like this work as he uses a lot of typography and experimentation with it, in this day and age not a lot of signs are painted by hand but digitally printed so this is a change for the better.

His work is very neat and crisp and he usually uses more than one font type within his posters, he mainly uses his own types of fonts that he has created but also as they are hand painted they wont ever be the same as they are hand painted. A lot of his work is colourful and manipulates his designs to make certain sections/words to stand out using colours, he also uses plain black and white and that can look interesting and different and although plain in colour it can be eye catching as a lot of poster include colour.

Overall I really like his work and his hand painting techniques, he is a very skilful painter and is good at his style of work.

Brighton Trip - Art Fair

On the 20th of September I went in a trip with my ED Graphic Design group and we went to Brighton to go to the art fair at the Brighton dome. At the art fair I got to explore a massive variety of techniques and processes by lots of different upcoming artists.

This is the pier which we went on when we was in Brighton.

In the art fair there wa some interesting pieces an some of my favourites are the ones below, I don't know the artists but I like the style and the colours they used and I find them interesting to look at.

This piece is really interesting, it is a house with scaffolding around it and the artist colours them up to look really confusing but yet you can still make out the image I like this style as it is neat but out there and different to all other work u have seen.

These two pieces are by the same artist and they look like a kind of pop art theme and have layers to have a 3D effect, I really like this type of design and it has to be one of my favourite pieces from the fair.

This is a piece of stencil art graffiti that I found while walking around Brighton I like this as it manipulates the image in a way that it is two images in one and has a comical appeal to it at the same time, it is a piece that makes you look at it and try to understand it.

Whilst in Brighton we visited Jon Burgerman's shop called ink'd, it was a good experience and we got to see some of his work first hand, I like his type of art as it has a graffiti and graphic element to it and is really nice and complementing to look at. It has a childlike but professional look to it and I really like it.

Once we had finished visiting all the places we needed to we went to choccywoccydoodah which was a good experience as it is a famous cake making business and the cakes are really amazing to look at and I got to appreciate it in real life and not only on tv.

I would recommend everyone to go to see it and also to go to ink'd as they are both really good places to see and experience for yourself.

D&ad trip - London, Brick Lane 2013

These are some images that I took from the D&ad trip to London, they are what we went to see and what we found in terms of graffiti and various other forms of street art.

This is the D&ad logo and their iconic piece/poster, I like the poster as it has an illusion effect to it and using the two colours they used helps it to stand out and defiantly catches the eye. From a design aspect I think the colours and the layout works really well and although it looks like an in depth design it was made completely from rotated triangles. It appears to look like a tunnel in a hexagon shape and the logo is at the end which I like and think is a clever form of advertisement.

This Basement jaxx poster was a design by a student from a university that was exhibiting their work at the D&ad. i really liked this poster design as it caught my eye with the colours and repeated basic design, I like the repetitive of 3 using the same type and different background as it attempts to display its meaning in more than one way, i feel that this poster is a modern design and is basically the new era of design.

These are two pieces of graffiti we see whilst walking around London on the way to Brick Lane, these are very detailed pieces. I really like these two pieces as they look really good and stood out from all the other street art we see.

This is a piece of street art we see by an artist called Space Invader, this is good because of how original it is and also the location where he placed it, he placed it down Brick Lane which is basically a lane that has been left to its own devices, he could have placed it on something or somewhere well recognised or famous instead he placed it somewhere harder to spot and up high this shows he didn't do it for the attention but to express his work and show others.

This is another piece of graffiti that I found down Brick Lane, this is another very detailed piece and I like it because it looks really good and obviously took along time to create and shows the artists passion for street art. I also like this because I think it has a meaning to it and the eyes are appealing  and made to look realistic.
